Is renting or buying the Starlink kit cheaper? The math, month by month

Most homes don’t get to choose: Starlink offers a rental or a purchase by address. When you do get a choice, here is the hardware cost over one, two and three years, from Starlink’s US order list on Nov 4, 2026.

Prices and rules re-read Nov 3, 20267-minute read
Bottom line

Renting costs less on hardware unless a monthly rental fee runs long enough to pass the $349 purchase price, and your address usually decides which you’re offered anyway.

Buying a Standard 4 X, Standard 4 or Starlink V5 is $349 once. Renting costs a $0, $99 or $199 activation, set by address and plan. With no monthly fee, the rental stays cheaper for as long as you keep it. With the $10 a month RV Mobile Internet reported in June 2026, renting at $0 would cost more than buying in month 35 (our math).

First: do you even get a choice?

Often you don’t. The offer at your address decides whether a home kit is rented or sold to you: each Residential entry on the national list was a rental on Oct 21, 25, 30 and Nov 3–4, 2026, while 8 of 11 had purchase tags on Oct 29. So the same plan can come with a rented kit at one address and a bought kit at another, and the list can change within days.

On Nov 3, 2026, the no-address Residential list held three home dishes at $349 apiece, to buy or rent: the Standard 4 X (Router 3 in the box), and the Standard 4 and Starlink V5 (each shipping with a Router Mini). The Starlink V5 rental shows a $349 list price that is adjusted down to $0. Type your address on starlink.com and read the kit line before planning around either route.

Is renting or buying cheaper over 1, 2 and 3 years?

This is hardware only. We leave the plan out because you pay it on either route, at the price your address gets. Each rental level appears twice: once with no monthly rental fee, and once with the $10 fee that was reported in mid-2026.

Hardware only (service is the same either way). Kit prices: Starlink’s US order list, Nov 4, 2026. Dashed line: the $10/mo rental fee RV Mobile Internet reported in June 2026, before reports in July 2026 that it was removed for new Residential orders. Per Starlink, checkout is where any monthly rental fee would appear.
Our math from Starlink’s US order list (Nov 4, 2026): buying is one payment; renting is the activation plus any monthly fee × months. The $10/mo figure: RV Mobile Internet reported a $10/mo rental fee on new Residential orders in June 2026; SatelliteInternet.com reported the monthly rental fee removed for new Residential orders in July 2026. Taxes and any demand surcharge not shown.

The crossover month (our math)

Buying is one payment. A rental is the activation plus any monthly rental fee, so with a fee its cost climbs every month. The crossover is the first month in which the rental’s running total is more than $349.

Rent at $0 activationMonth 35

With a $10/mo fee, this rental passes $349 in month 35: $0 + 35 × $10 = $350. With no fee, it never does.

Rent at $99 activationMonth 26

With a $10/mo fee, this rental passes $349 in month 26: $99 + 26 × $10 = $359. With no fee, it never does.

Rent at $199 activationMonth 16

With a $10/mo fee, this rental passes $349 in month 16: $199 + 16 × $10 = $359. With no fee, it never does.

So if your checkout shows no monthly rental fee, renting is the cheaper hardware route for as long as you keep the service. If it shows a fee, divide the gap to $349 by that fee to find your own crossover. A $0 activation with a $10 fee takes 35 months to catch up; a $199 activation with the same fee gets there in month 16. To see the kit and plan together, use the cheapest-path calculator.

Beyond the math, what changes when you rent or buy?

Renting

Low up front: $0, $99 or $199. The $99 and $199 levels include professional installation.

Starlink owns the kit. Rental hardware has to reach Starlink in good shape no more than 30 days after you cancel, or you pay the kit’s full retail price.

Any monthly rental fee appears at checkout and is billed each month alongside the plan.

Buying

$349 once, and the kit is yours to keep after you cancel.

A starlink.com purchase can be returned undamaged up to 30 days past the Payment Due Date, and the refund covers the first month’s fee as well.

Standard and Mini kits come with a 12-month limited warranty in the US.

A rental suits a household that wants the lowest bill this month and will look after the dish, say a family in the Texas Hill Country that gets the $0 activation. Buying suits someone who expects to keep Starlink for years, or who doesn’t want a return deadline hanging over a move. How kit and plan prices moved during 2026 is logged on price history.

Renting and the $100 referral credit

The plain version: Starlink’s referral terms require buying the kit and the service on starlink.com itself, and nothing in the terms or the help center settles whether a rental-kit order qualifies. That is all Starlink has published, so no page here shows a rented kit earning the credit, and your rental math shouldn’t include it.

If your address offers a purchase and the reward matters to your math, buying on starlink.com is the route the terms clearly describe. Even then the credit is $100 of account credit unless you choose otherwise, which Starlink subtracts from the next invoice, once your service has run for two months, if you qualify. It pays service bills, not the kit: the cheapest first year, plan by plan.

What this math leaves out

  • Your address decides. Many addresses get only one route; the comparison only matters when starlink.com shows you both.
  • The monthly plan. It comes on top on both routes, at the price your address gets.
  • Demand surcharge. Busy cells can add a one-time demand surcharge when you buy or activate, set by address and plan.
  • A late or damaged return. A rented dish that isn’t back, undamaged, within a month of cancelling is billed at full retail price.
  • The fee itself. The $10 figure is a press report, not a price on Starlink’s list. Your checkout screen is the only place that shows whether you pay one.

Skip the order for now if…

  • you’re counting on the referral credit with a rented kit: the terms want the kit bought on starlink.com and are silent on rentals
  • you may move within months and can’t be sure of shipping a rental back undamaged within a month of cancelling
  • you want the dish for one season or one trip: the referral terms are written for customers who stay
  • you have, or once had, a Starlink account: the credit is for first-time customers only
  • your checkout shows a monthly rental fee you didn’t expect: work out your crossover month before you pay

What budget buyers ask

Is it cheaper to rent or buy Starlink?

On hardware, renting usually is: a $0, $99 or $199 activation against $349 to buy (Nov 4, 2026). With no monthly rental fee, a rental never costs more than buying. With the $10 fee RV Mobile Internet reported in June 2026, renting at $0 would pass the purchase price in month 35 (our math). Your address usually decides which you’re offered.

Can I choose between renting and buying the Starlink kit?

Not always. The offer at your address decides whether a home kit is rented or sold to you: each Residential entry on the national list was a rental on Oct 21, 25, 30 and Nov 3–4, 2026, while 8 of 11 had purchase tags on Oct 29. Your options appear once starlink.com has your address.

Does Starlink still charge a monthly rental fee?

Starlink says any monthly rental fee appears at checkout and is billed each month alongside the plan. RV Mobile Internet reported a $10/mo rental fee on new Residential orders in June 2026; SatelliteInternet.com reported the monthly rental fee removed for new Residential orders in July 2026. Check the checkout screen.

What happens to a rented Starlink kit when I cancel?

Rental hardware has to reach Starlink in good shape no more than 30 days after you cancel, or you pay the kit’s full retail price.

Does a rented Starlink kit get the $100 referral credit?

Starlink hasn’t said. Starlink’s referral terms require buying the kit and the service on starlink.com itself, and nothing in the terms or the help center settles whether a rental-kit order qualifies. Leave the credit out of your rental math until Starlink confirms it.

Is installation included with a Starlink rental?

At the $99 and $199 activation levels, yes: professional installation is bundled. Starlink’s home page offers professional installation at no charge on the 200 Mbps and Max home plans. The $0 activation is self-install.

Can I return a Starlink kit I bought?

A starlink.com purchase can be returned undamaged up to 30 days past the Payment Due Date, and the refund covers the first month’s fee as well.
