The cheapest Starlink kit, route by route
Mini, rental or purchase: every way to get Starlink hardware in the US, what each costs up front, who owns the dish, and the catch. Kit prices from Starlink’s US order list on Nov 4, 2026.
The cheapest Starlink kit to buy is the Mini at $149 on starlink.com (Nov 4, 2026), made for Roam travel plans. For a home, a rented kit can cost $0 up front, but only where your address gets that activation.
At other addresses the rental activation is $99 or $199, professional installation included. Where a purchase is offered, a Standard 4 X, Standard 4 or Starlink V5 costs $349. Your routes appear on starlink.com once you type the address.
Every Starlink kit route, cheapest first
“Up front” is what the hardware costs on order day. A monthly plan comes on top on every route, including the $0 ones. “Who owns it” matters later: a rented kit has to go back when you cancel.
| Kit route | Up front | Who owns it | The catch | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rent a Standard 4 X or Standard 4, $0 activation | $0 | Starlink | Only at some addresses and plans. Returned to Starlink within 30 days of cancelling; any monthly rental fee appears at checkout. | Nov 4, 2026 |
| Rent the Starlink V5 | $0 | Starlink | Listed at $349 and adjusted to $0. Only where your address is offered the V5. Same return rule as any rental. | Nov 4, 2026 |
| Rent, $99 activation | $99 | Starlink | Includes professional installation. Same return rule. | Nov 4, 2026 |
| Buy the Starlink Mini (travel) | $149 | You | For Roam (travel) plans. On 100GB and 300GB, speed falls once the full-speed allowance is gone. | Nov 4, 2026 |
| Rent, $199 activation | $199 | Starlink | Includes professional installation. Same return rule. | Nov 4, 2026 |
| Buy a Standard 4 X, Standard 4 or V5 | $349 | You | Only where your address offers a purchase. 30-day return on starlink.com; 12-month limited warranty. | Nov 4, 2026 |
| Buy the Standard kit for a Roam plan | $349 | You | The same Roam plans as the Mini, for $200 more (our math). | Nov 4, 2026 |
| Buy from a retail chain (Walmart, Best Buy and others) | Set by the store | You | Can’t earn the referral credit, then or later. Returns are handled by the store. | Nov 3, 2026 |
| Buy the Performance kit | $1,999 | You | Not the cheap route. | Nov 4, 2026 |
The Performance kit ($1,999) is listed for completeness. It costs more than 5 times the Standard kit (our math) and is never the cheap route.
For a home: your address picks rent or buy
You don’t pick the home kit route from a menu. The offer at your address decides whether a home kit is rented or sold to you: each Residential entry on the national list was a rental on Oct 21, 25, 30 and Nov 3–4, 2026, while 8 of 11 had purchase tags on Oct 29.
On Nov 3, 2026, the no-address Residential list held three home dishes at $349 apiece, to buy or rent: the Standard 4 X (Router 3 in the box), and the Standard 4 and Starlink V5 (each shipping with a Router Mini). Which one an address gets isn’t shown until you enter it.
If you’re offered a rental
The one-time rental activation comes in three sizes, $0, $99 and $199, and the address and plan pick one. The two higher levels bundle professional installation. The Starlink V5 rental shows a $349 list price that is adjusted down to $0.
Starlink says any monthly rental fee appears at checkout and is billed each month alongside the plan. RV Mobile Internet reported a $10/mo rental fee on new Residential orders in June 2026; SatelliteInternet.com reported the monthly rental fee removed for new Residential orders in July 2026. Check the checkout screen before you pay.
Rental hardware has to reach Starlink in good shape no more than 30 days after you cancel, or you pay the kit’s full retail price. That’s the real price of a $0 kit: you have to keep it in good shape and ship it back.
If you’re offered a purchase
Buying is $349 once, and the kit is yours. A starlink.com purchase can be returned undamaged up to 30 days past the Payment Due Date, and the refund covers the first month’s fee as well. Standard and Mini kits come with a 12-month limited warranty in the US. Whether buying beats renting over one, two or three years depends on a rental fee; we work it out month by month on rent or buy.
What installation adds
Starlink’s home page offers professional installation at no charge on the 200 Mbps and Max home plans. Residential 100 Mbps isn’t on that list. On any plan, a $0 activation or a bought kit means you set the dish up yourself.
The kit is the smaller part of the bill
Residential 100 Mbps was $49.50 a month on Starlink’s no-address US price list on Nov 4, 2026, after Oct 29 levels of $44 or $49.50, and only some areas get it. Residential Max, sold everywhere, was $143 on the same list. The price at your address can differ. See the cheapest plan, or put kit and plan together in the cheapest-path calculator.
For travel: the Mini is the cheapest kit to buy
The Starlink Mini is $149 on starlink.com (Nov 4, 2026). It runs on Roam plans, which are priced nationally: Roam 100GB is $55 a month. The Standard kit for a Roam plan is $349, so the Mini is the cheaper way onto the same plans, whether you’re a weekend camper in the Mountain West or a snowbird in Arizona.
Activation Benefit
A brand-new Mini bought from starlink.com in the US carries an “Activation Benefit” of an amount Starlink doesn’t publish, provided you open a new account and activate within 7 days of delivery. We leave it out of every total because there is no number to count.
0% monthly payments
Starlink’s US installment agreement splits hardware into 0% APR monthly payments, on the condition that you keep service for 12 months. It spreads the cost; it doesn’t lower it. Only pick it if you mean to keep Starlink a year.
If you’d choose Residential Max for your home anyway, there’s another route: a Residential Max household can add a rented Mini with no monthly charge and pay half price on eligible Roam plans (subject to change, not offered everywhere, one per customer). It’s only cheap if Max is the plan you’d pick on its own merits; every $0 hardware path runs the numbers. For plan prices with the Mini, see the cheapest Mini plan.
starlink.com or a store kit?
Starlink’s retailer page names 16 US chains that stock its kits, Walmart and Amazon among them, and a kit from any of them earns no referral reward. Starlink’s help center is blunt about it: an order placed without the link, through a different person’s link, or at a retail store never shows the referral, and Starlink won’t attach it afterward.
Store prices change often and we don’t track them. To compare, add twelve months of your plan to each kit price and set the totals side by side; the referral credit only belongs on the starlink.com side, and only if you qualify. Year-one totals by plan does that math for starlink.com.
Two smaller differences: a kit from a retailer is returned to that retailer, and the 12-month warranty runs from the store purchase date. On starlink.com you deal with Starlink for both.

What a kit price leaves out
- Your address decides the route. Rental or purchase, and which activation, appear once starlink.com has the address.
- A rented kit stays Starlink’s. Rental hardware has to reach Starlink in good shape no more than 30 days after you cancel, or you pay the kit’s full retail price.
- A monthly rental fee, if any, appears at checkout on top of the plan.
- Demand surcharge. Busy cells can add a one-time demand surcharge when you buy or activate, set by address and plan.
- The referral reward. Starlink’s referral terms require buying the kit and the service on starlink.com itself, and nothing in the terms or the help center settles whether a rental-kit order qualifies. We never show a rented kit as earning it.
Skip the order for now if…
- you’re waiting on a store sale: store kits are shut out of the referral credit, then and later
- you may not manage to ship a rented dish back undamaged within a month of cancelling: missing that costs the kit’s full retail price
- you need one trip or one month of service: the referral terms are written for customers who stay
- you have, or once had, a Starlink account: the credit is for first-time customers only
- a wired line (fiber or cable) already reaches your home at a lower monthly price than your Starlink level
What budget buyers ask
What is the cheapest Starlink kit?
To buy, the Starlink Mini at $149 on starlink.com (Nov 4, 2026), built for Roam travel plans. For a home, a rented Standard 4 X or Standard 4 can cost $0 up front where the address gets that activation, and the V5 rental carries a $349 list price adjusted to $0. The address decides which routes appear.
Is the Starlink Mini cheaper than the standard dish?
Yes, to buy: the Mini is $149 and the Standard kit is $349 (Nov 4, 2026). The Mini is made for Roam plans, though. For a home, weigh it against renting a Standard kit at $0, $99 or $199 up front, set by the address. Cheapest Mini plan.
Can I rent a Starlink dish instead of buying it?
Often, but Starlink decides by address. The offer at your address decides whether a home kit is rented or sold to you: each Residential entry on the national list was a rental on Oct 21, 25, 30 and Nov 3–4, 2026, while 8 of 11 had purchase tags on Oct 29. Your own route appears once you type the address on starlink.com. Rent or buy: the math.
Is Starlink equipment cheaper at Best Buy, Home Depot or Walmart?
Store prices move and we don’t track them, so compare first-year totals rather than kit tags. Starlink’s retailer page names 16 US chains that stock its kits, Walmart and Amazon among them, and a kit from any of them earns no referral reward, and Starlink won’t attach a referral afterward. Year-one totals by plan.
Is Starlink installation free?
Starlink’s home page offers professional installation at no charge on the 200 Mbps and Max home plans. The $99 and $199 rental activations include professional installation. With a $0 activation or a bought kit, you set it up yourself.
Can I pay for the Starlink kit in monthly payments?
Starlink’s US installment agreement splits hardware into 0% APR monthly payments, on the condition that you keep service for 12 months. It spreads the kit price out; it doesn’t lower it.
Does a rented Starlink kit count for the referral credit?
Starlink hasn’t said. Starlink’s referral terms require buying the kit and the service on starlink.com itself, and nothing in the terms or the help center settles whether a rental-kit order qualifies. No page here shows a rented kit as earning it. The rented-kit question.
